PALLOTTINE HEROES

Brother Edwin Wishart S.A.C.

10.04.1933 - 10.03.2003

Eddie was born on 10 April 1933 at North Perth, being the third child and eldest son of Gert and Bill Wishart.

After moving to Leederville he attended Christian Brother College Leederville and showed above average ability academically as well as a very distinctive hand writing style of the highest quality presumably acquiring it from his mother who won many hand writing competitions. He also showed potential at sport representing the College at cricket and tennis. It is no doubt that he acquired these skills in the back yard at the home in Leederville where we established a cricket pitch made up of uneven broken house bricks with the ball going in all directions. His tennis prowess was gained on the back yard tennis court with the net being a pole resting on two empty fruit boxes. It was difficult to gauge if the ball went over or below the net but Eddie always maintained it was his point.

Even though Eddie had the ability to continue his studies he was forced to leave school upon attaining his Junior Certificate, due to the economic condition at the time. He commenced employment as a clerk with the Western Australian Government Railway and approached his chosen profession at the time with his usual integrity and hard work. His ability soon gave him the opportunity of promotion which meant transferring to Bunbury where he was stationed for a number of years. But this did not stop him from visiting the family regularly on week-ends.

Upon reflection it was clear to see that God had another plan for Eddie, as soon after his father's death in 1961, where we witnessed Dad's conversion to the Catholic faith on his death bed, Eddie's thoughts and desires leaned towards the religious life. It was no doubt a very difficult decision for him but with prayer and trust in God and the absolute encouragement of his mother he decided to try out with the Pallottines at Millgrove in Victoria. His mother wasn't quite sure who the Pallottines were, so she went with him to Millgrove to look after her boy. She was obviously impressed with what she saw as she stayed at Millgrove helping and assisting with house duties at the College. She was delighted with his choice and so was the whole family when he took his final profession on 23 February 1969.

No doubt the Pallottines can expand on Eddie's involvement since then but as far as we are concerned Eddie has lived his life with dignity and compassion for others. He was the quiet achiever of whom we are immensely proud and we are sure that on Monday evening (10.03.2003) at three minutes to seven, he went to heaven.
That's our brother!

Br. Eddie's Life as a Pallottine

His first contact with us Pallottines must have been when he worked as a volunteer in Broome in 1961.
Fr. Regan said about him, in his reference,
"...most devoted to his religious duties, most respectful to authority, and willing to help in every worthy cause. He is most charitable, cheerful, and he repays well every confidence that is placed in him ... of an excellent family."
This is very much how we all experienced him as a confrere. He also had a keen sense of humour.

In 1962 Eddie entered the novitiate and in 1964 he made his first profession. Two years later he went to Tardun where he was finally professed in 1969.
Some of his appointments were (in 1987) to the Formation team and as Regional Bursar.
In 1988 he joined the Rossmoyne community from where he continued his work as a bursar.
For several years he worked as a Murdoch University Chaplain.

In his personal report of 1994 he wrote: "a good amount of my time is carried out away from the community. I see my time at home in the community as an opportunity to help my confreres, and to foster a happy community spirit, to be prepared to do extra at times, and to assist confreres and visitors when they stay with us that they are welcome and accepted by our community."

In response to his own prayers and wishes God mercifully took Eddie after having suffered from cancer for about three months.

May he rest in peace
